Importance of Linux virtual machine support

Linux support has been updated in the software of Hyper-V virtualization for Windows Server 2008 R2. When Linux virtual machines run on Hyper-V hypervisor then the software manages to improve relatively weak support. Hypervisor based virtual machines are basically those servers or operating systems upon which virtualization technology has been implemented.

Another name for hypervisor is virtual machine monitor which allows numbers of operating systems to run on a host computer. The best fact about the same is that it can mix various versions of Linux and Windows at the same time. The cost of the customers can be reduced and the continuity of the business can be improved as windows server 2008 Hyper-V provides an end-to-end virtualization platform. Microsoft has also launched the successors of windows server 2003 which is known as windows server 2008.

The most important feature of this new release i.e. Linux support is the support for SMP i.e. symmetric multi-processing which means that on every virtual machine, hyper-V can support up to four processors. In order to complete heavy back-end computation, SMP support plays a vital role in the virtual machines. Even though multi-core processors were prevailing but inclusion of support was not made sooner and later other improvements were also included such as time synchronization between host and virtual machine, failure detection, and improved performance. The performance can be easily improved by supporting Fastpath Boot.

The virtual machines which run on Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 SP3, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.2 up to 5.5 are provided with support of Linux.  In spite of such appealing features in Linux support, it was still far behind its competitors and as a result Microsoft Company felt the need of improvising the effect of the existing Linux support for virtual machines.

It appeases the Linux community which has threatened to remove support for Microsoft’s Hyper-V in the standard Linux kernel. Therefore we can say Microsoft Company provides a broader scope of opportunities so that their customers can achieve success at a continual rate.
